5 DIY Cat Toys for Indoor Enrichment (Safe & Easy)

What are some DIY toys you can make for your cat to enrich it?

You don’t need a craft room to keep your cat mentally and physically engaged—just a few safe household items and a plan to rotate activities. Our team’s favorite DIY toys are the ones that encourage stalking, pouncing, batting, and foraging, while keeping claws and teeth away from anything risky (like rubber bands, string, or foam pieces).

1) Toilet paper roll treat “forager”

Fold one end of a cardboard tube inward to close it, drop in a few kibble pieces or small treats, then fold the other end shut. Poke a couple of small holes so scent escapes. Your cat will bat it around to make the food fall out, satisfying natural hunting and snack-seeking instincts.

2) Paper-bag “crinkle cave”

Take a plain paper grocery bag, remove handles, and puff it open. Add a sheet of packing paper for extra crinkle sound, then cut two small “windows” on the sides for peek-and-pounce play. Place it on a non-slip surface so it doesn’t slide wildly on hard floors.

3) Cardboard box puzzle station

Use a shallow box lid and tape down a few empty paper cups or small cardboard rings. Hide kibble between and under them so your cat has to scoop, nudge, and nose around. Keep tape edges pressed flat and replace the box if it gets soggy or heavily shredded.

4) Sock “kicker” toy (no loose strings)

Fill a clean sock with crumpled paper and a pinch of catnip (optional), then tie a tight knot at the open end. This makes a satisfying bunny-kick target. Skip yarn ties or dangling ribbons—secure knots only, and retire it if holes form.

5) DIY wand teaser (safe swap-in attachments)

Use a sturdy dowel or chopstick and attach a strip of fleece fabric with multiple tight knots. Keep sessions interactive—wand toys are best when you’re actively supervising, then stored out of reach to prevent chewing.

FAQ

How often should I rotate my cat’s toys?

Rotate every few days so “old” toys feel new again. Keep a small set out and swap in different textures and play styles to maintain interest.
