Studying through a PDF works best when it stops being “a file you scroll” and becomes an active study session with a clear goal, quick checkpoints, and built-in review. The idea is to turn the document into prompts you can answer and concepts you can recall—without rereading the same pages over and over.
Write a one-line target such as “Understand the 4 stages of photosynthesis” or “Be able to solve 10 practice problems.” Skimming aimlessly leads to highlighting everything and remembering little.
Spend 3–5 minutes scanning headings, subheadings, diagrams, and end-of-section questions. This builds a mental map so details have a place to “stick.”
Use timed chunks (like 20–30 minutes). After each chunk, close or minimize the PDF and recite what you remember in your own words. Then reopen to check gaps. This “retrieve then verify” loop is more efficient than rereading.
Highlight only what you can’t easily reconstruct (definitions, formulas, key steps). In the margins, write questions: “Why does this happen?” “What are the steps?” “How is this different from X?” Those questions become instant flashcards later.

If the PDF includes problems, do them without looking at solutions first. If it’s conceptual, create 5–10 self-quiz questions and answer them from memory.
Highlight only after you’ve tried to explain the section from memory. If you can say it clearly, don’t highlight it; if you can’t, highlight the smallest phrase that fixes the gap and add a margin question to test it later.
